The Benefits Of Using Automatic Soil Samplers
With Satellite Imagery Guidance

When I have tried to use yield maps to select soil sampling sites in the past and I found that to get multiple years data that was accurate data is hard to do. If there where non soil related issues restricting crop growth I could not use those years data. The other thing I experienced with yield data was the data was not accurate because of the operator errors of the yield monitor use. Because of these issues I didn’t have the confidence in accuracy using yield maps. It also was not as accessible or easy to use as satellite imagery which bogged the process down.

While trying electro-conductive equipment I found it to be extremely time consuming and costly. You had to drag the tool across the field to collect the data and then download it into the computer to create zone maps and then select your soil sampling sites. The tool also required maintenance which added to the cost and created more time restraints. Satellite imagery is almost instantly available anywhere you are even on “smart phones”, so I don’t see the need in adding another in field process and wasting time which can be better used.

I considered digitized soil maps but chose not to use them because they where produced by hand drawn maps from years ago and I felt they could be inaccurate. With satellite imagery I have multiple years data available and can use the repetitive images to verify accurate soil zones and select soil sample sites accordingly. I was fortunate enough to get imagery from a provider Satshot. I have been using the services from them for over ten years and would highly recommend them to anyone wanting to use satellite imagery hand in hand with your automatic soil sampler. They are a very full service provider with years of experience and a high quality product. You can find them at Satshot.com
